Another snowfall

Yesterday and even last night we had a new snowfall. The temperature being above zero, be it ever so slightly, and the sun shining today warming everything its rays touch, even this snow is rapidly turning into a watery mess. I drove past the Vantaa river and stopped to take a couple pics of the river, currently not flooding but the water is pretty high.

Snow's gone

Only a week ago we had a good 40-50cm of snow here after the Sunday blizzard. Then the temperature rose above zero and it started to rain and now the snow is mostly melted away. The sidewalks are treacherously slippery with all that wet ice and it feels like spring.

Winter wonderland

The Siberian winter hit Fnland. Temperature dipped to -25C even here in Helsinki, and a whole lot lower up north. Our world froze and then it started to snow. Now it's "only" -13C - which felt almost warm after the -25! - and snow has been fluttering down in a slow but steady pace. We have a winter wonderland here now.

Frozen

We still have no snow, but we have a lot of frost and ice. The air has been humid for a long time and now that it froze, the moisture froze into ice art on grass and the roofs of cars and everywhere.

First snow

It was wet. Then it froze. Then it started to snow. First real snow of the winter.

First icycle

Yesterday we had the first real freeze of the autumn, and some icycles were hanging from the edges of drains.

Frosty morning

This morning was the first one with a frost bite. Yesterday was already cold, but today the temperature was below zero and the ground was white with frost. The sun is shining brightly, making the air clear and crispy.

Signs of spring

Spring is early this year. Our yard is mostly snow and ice free already and it's not even March yet! Not that I wouldn't know that a new batch of snow can attack any day until April or so... Flowers are coming up here and there, practically through the last bits of ice and snow.

Fickle February

February this year has been going bakc and forth, some days a few degrees below zero and snowing, some days a few degrees above zero and raining. Sun hasn't shown itself to us too often at all this winter, and the gloom creeps on. Today, however, has been a sunny day for a change, and it immediatelly shows in my mood and energy to do things.

 

Ice and water

We have had some roller coaster weather here this winter. The Christmas time winter wonderland melted away, giving way to frost, that turned into a snow world again overnight. We had 30cm of new snow within a few days and then the "heatwave" hit us again, melting everything away, leaving the world a wet icy mess.

 

From winter wonderland to frost

Our winter wonderland gave way to plus degrees and wet ice. The ground was treacherously slippery for several days until everything froze again and new snow covered the world. Not as much snow, only a few centimeters dry frosty snow that squeaks under your shoes. No fluff on the trees either, but tiny ice crystals that glisten in the January sun.

Winter wonderland

This year we here in Finland don't need to dream of a white Christmas. We have one. Truly, like something our of a Disney movie, just see for yourself:

Icy

After a mostly very warm autumn, winter has shown its teeth this week, reminding everybody that the cold and snow is on its way again. Yesterday we had the first snow, sort of. Light white stuff fluttering around, settling on the ground for a while, making the roads slightly slippery here and there for half of the day. Today there is no snow left, but it is cold and windy and all the little creeks and puddles are frozen and even the ponds on the golf course are partly covered with a thin layer of ice.

Our Timmy, the dog that we got in late July, is puzzled and confused by th cold and ice. It's probably the first time he experiences them. And the need to wear a pullover. He seriously dislikes it...

 

 

 

Frosty morning

This autumn was half of an autumn for quite some time, until last week leaves started to fall, and this week the temperatures dropped, at least temporarily. This morning was the first frosty one.
